Job Description

Utilize the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) in an orderly, systematic approach to meet the changing needs of patients across the life span.

Accountabilitites/Duties:

  • Delivers Nursing Care according to standards of care defined within the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and American Women's Health Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) standards and guidelines.
  • Completes all OB Unit Specific skill validations and core competencies as outlined by the manager/CRN.
  • Provides care to antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients and newborns as outlined in the Birth Center operating guidelines and standards of care.
  • Evaluates the status of antepartum and outpatients with special attention to confirmation of maternal and fetal well being, identification of risks and planning for intervention.
  • Provides antepartum and outpatients with education and discharge planning with an emphasis on individual needs, risk factors and appropriate follow-up.
  • Assesses, evaluates and documents labor progress for the intrapartum patient per hospital protocol.
  • Identification and management of fetal heart rate patterns for antepartum and intrapartum patients.
  • Promotes a physically safe birth experience for the mother, newborn and family.
  • Facilitates an emotionally and socially satisfying experience for patient and families including the integration of the newborn into the family.
  • Recognizes and respects individual patient choices during childbirth and acts as patient advocate.
  • Crisis intervention with an emphasis on patient safety, prioritization & time management for intrapartum, postpartum and at newborns. This includes mobilization of resources for emergency c/s, intrauterine resuscitation, neonatal resuscitation, stabilization and transport if indicated.
  • Identification and management of the at-risk or ill newborn.
  • Provides individualized ongoing patient education based on family's knowledge, level of understanding, skills, resources, cultural needs, and individual wishes.
  • Facilitate grieving for families with a miscarriage or stillbirth.
  • Recognizes risk factors, change in status and interventions appropriate for care.
  • Communicates effectively with the multi-disciplinary care teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Current WI RN License.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • NRP certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • NIHSS required within 3 months of hire/start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • BSN degree
  • STABLE certification
